It was amazing to attend the Children in Care and Care Leavers Awards ceremony on Friday 23rd November at the Amex Stadium. It was a positive, uplifting and glitzy event to mark the achievements of young people, with GOAT (Greatest of All Time) certificates and trophies being presented by the Mayor of Brighton, Cllr. Dee Simson, and Pinaki Ghoshal, Executive Director of Families, Children & Learning. Congratulations to all the proud award winners and everyone involved in arranging this feel good celebration of their tremendous efforts. 

Anti-Bullying Week

This month we had anti-bullying week. The Equality and Anti-Bullying Service sent materials under the ‘Choose Respect’ theme to primary and secondary schools that buy into the service and has promoted to all schools the anti-bullying alliance resources. https://www.anti-bullyingalliance.org.uk/anti-bullying-week Schools got involved with this theme and engaged children and young people in activities to promote respect and kindness. For example: PACA held an anti-bullying t-shirt competition.

Anabel Carrington from the Community Safety Team organised an Odd Socks Day for us here in Hove Town Hall to raise money for the anti-bullying alliance and the excellent work it does.


Patcham Infant school enjoyed a week of friendship and respect during Anti-Bullying week this year. The children were wowed by a film clip with a personal message from Andy from the Odd Socks Gang and CBeebies, while joining him in wearing odd socks to celebrate difference. The children learnt about what respect means and how to show respect in school. They were reminded about what bullying behaviours are and what to do to get help if they see it or experience it. The children were reminded about the importance of including others and how to be welcoming.

Youth Led Grants

Young people in Brighton & Hove took the lead on agreeing funding for £88,000 of council grants to fund community-based projects for young people aged 11-19 (or up to 25 with special educational needs).

Brighton & Hove City Council’s youth-led grants programme offers funding of between £500 and £5,000. The grants support projects and activities for young people in four key areas: improving mental health support, helping reduce alcohol and substance misuse, providing activities for young people, and creating volunteering and work experience opportunities.

Young people have been at the centre of both the bidding process and in deciding how the funding should be allocated. A group of young people made a presentation about their involvement in the funding scheme at the council’s Children, Young People and Skills committee this month.

Primary Schools go cross country running

After a wintery start over 1,000 children took part in the annual Brighton & Hove Primary Schools Cross Country races at Waterhall on Wednesday 21 November. Children from 41 Brighton & Hove Primary schools took part – all racing over the 2k course. Sports Leaders from Blatchington Mill, Dorothy Stringer and PACA helped at the event by marshalling out on the course and co-ordinating the race results. Phoenix Athletics club also supported the event by running the finish funnel. The event is organised by the School Games Organiser who is part of the Active for Life team at Brighton & Hove City Council. Emma Greenough – School Games Organiser for Brighton & Hove said ‘It was great to have so many children taking part and representing their school. As we all know being active is so important in keeping a healthy lifestyle and it’s fantastic to see so many children enjoying running today. So many schools now have Daily Mile type challenges at school which encourages so many more children to get outside and run and I think that’s why we are seeing so many children taking part and having ago at the Cross Country today.’

Congratulations to the Supported Employment Team

Lewis is a client of the Brighton & Hove Supported Employment Team (SET). His service from SET is part of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) funded Local Supported Employment programme. Prior to being a SET client, Lewis attended a local day centre part-time. Through his involvement in volunteer work at the Sussex Cricket Club, Lewis started travelling independently on the bus, stopped attending the day service, started running a session for the day service he used to attend, and working towards gaining a coaching qualification – which could lead to paid work in the future. Lewis is justifiably proud of what he has achieved and the Sussex Cricket Club has been wonderfully supportive of Lewis and his aspirations. He was nominated for Cricket volunteer of the year award and went to a swanky dinner at Lords cricket ground in London. I am very pleased that our SET team has played a part in supporting Lewis and the Sussex Cricket Club in these achievements.

Supported Employment (SET) client celebrates 25 years in job

This month Robert Brown, one of our learning disabled Supported Employment Clients, was given recognition by his employer, Sainsbury’s, for 25 years of service. He received chocolates and gift cards. Robert started at Sainsbury’s London Road store in 1993. That store is no longer there and Robert now works at the New England Quarter Sainsbury’s store.

Robert was supported into employment by the Supported Employment Team in 1993. Over the 25 years the Supported Employment Team has kept in touch with Robert and his employer and on many occasions our team has been called upon to provide short-term support to ensure that Robert successfully maintains his employment.

Providing Access to Childcare and Employment 

PACE project with service users at a children’s centre

PACE (Providing Access to Childcare and Employment)  is a European funded project delivered locally by the  Family Information Service (FIS) and children’s centres. This video gives a brief overview of the project by Eleanor Stewart, Project Co-ordinator, and some of the parents who  are signed up to PACE.  The video was shown at a national conference earlier this month by Fiona Ricci, FIS Manager, and it will also be included in the paper that is going to committee in March. On 9th November, over 300 members of the Youth Parliament - including Josh Cliff representing Brighton & Hove - joined the 10th annual UKYP debate in the House of Commons. 

Following a record 1.1 million votes from young people in this year's ‘Make Your Mark’ ballot, debates were held on 5 topics that young people cared about, chaired by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Rt Hon John Bercow MP. 

At the end, the members of Youth Parliament voted and decided on two campaigns to work on over the next year. These are 'Votes at 16' and 'Put an end to Knife crime'

Drove Road is Outstanding 

A service run by Brighton & Hove City Council for young people aged 8-18 who have learning disabilities and challenging behaviour has been judged ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. The Drove Road residential short breaks service in Portslade provides a mixture of short breaks and full-time accommodation. 

Albion in the Community update

Congratulations to all schools who competed in the Albion Cup football competitions recently. Primary Schools Goldstone, Hangleton, St Mary’s Catholic and Balfour (under 11 mixed) and Balfour, Cottesmore, Goldstone and St Mary’s Catholic (under 11 girls) have now qualified for the county-wide finals which will take place Brighton & Hove Albion’s Training Ground in Lancing later this month. The winning teams of this event will go on to represent Albion in the Community (AITC)/ Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club (BHAFC) at the national finals and get to play at a (yet unknown) Premier League stadium! AITC are also running ‘Albion Cup’ inter-school competitions in enterprise, literacy and numeracy at the Amex stadium this year.

It continues to be a busy Ofsted time for us all. Saltdean Primary and Stanford Junior were inspected last month and I’m very pleased that they both continue to be Good. Congratulations and well done to acting headteacher Natalie Burley (Saltdean); headteacher Paul Davis (Stanford) and all teachers, support staff, parents and of course the children!

The Ofsted inspector said the following about Saltdean: 
‘Parents and pupils […] said that the school is friendly and welcoming. Pupils told [the Ofsted inspector] that all the adults are caring and that they like their school.’

The Ofsted inspector said the following about Stanford Junior:

‘Pupils in the school are happy and successful. They settle quickly when they arrive in Year 3 because staff invest in helping them to move successfully from their infant school. They relish the opportunities to learn beyond their formal curriculum, through rich experiences in and out of school, supported by carefully planned trips and activities.’

City Academy Whitehawk, Royal Spa Nursery and Our Lady of Lourdes School had inspections this month. I look forward to reporting back next time. Best of luck to everyone at the schools!

City joins secondary school Ofsted ‘elite’

I’m delighted to announce that 100% of our Secondary Schools now hold ‘Good’ Ofsted judgments. What a wonderful achievement for our headteachers, teachers, support staff, governors and the students. Well done everyone! We’re now one of only 26 local authorities out of 150 nationally where all children can attend a Good secondary school. This is about more than academic achievements, it shows that pupils across our city are able to thrive and reach their potential in our schools. It’s a tribute to the work of the city’s Education Partnership, which encourages schools to work even more closely with each other to raise standards and make Brighton & Hove the best place in the country to grow up in.

Black History Month

This month our schools have been learning about and celebrating Black History Month. There have been assemblies and lessons, learning about history and reading stories on the subject, such as the book above: Young, Gifted and Black by Jamia Wilson and Andrea Pippins, aimed at KS2 & KS3 pupils. Roundabout Nursery in Whitehawk did lots of activities for Black History Month, and this is what the children and staff said:

‘At Roundabout Nursery we are really enjoying celebrating Black History Month, learning about our similarities and differences. We have explored tasting different foods, these include; plantains, cassava, jolloff rice, banana dumplings (akara), African meat pie and banana cake. We have tried different customs and worn head ties and we have learnt words like ‘Kushe’ meaning ‘hello’ in Creole.’

Congratulations Carden Primary School

Congratulations to Carden Primary for the fantastic work they do around PE and sport. This video shows a brief insight into how the school utilizes its PE and School Sport Premium to give all of its pupils the opportunity to get involved with PE, School Sport and Physical Activity. Poverty Proofing the School Day

We are now in the final two terms of the Poverty Proofing audits. This term researchers have been in St Bernadette’s Primary, Stanford Infant and Stanford Junior, Aldrington Primary, St Andrew’s Primary and Varndean Secondary. There is so much positive practice in schools and the recent review visit by Children North East in some of the schools where there were audits last year found that schools are taking on board the feedback and improving further. 

The team is looking at the emerging themes and what the council can improve to support families experiencing poverty. They are also developing materials for schools that can be used in PSHE to help children and young people explore poverty. I am delighted that the researchers will be working with the Pavilion and Downs Teaching School Alliance (PDTSA) to offer further training for staff in this area.

National Adoption Week: 15^th – 21^st October 2018

It’s that time of year when we nationally support and celebrate adoption. Thanks to all our Brighton & Hove schools who are working in partnership with parents to support children and young people adopted from care during their education journey. For example, some of our schools have established regular group meetings for parents in school. These meetings can lead to a greater understanding of common challenges for children and young people adopted from care and have led to changes in school practice, such as restructuring the start of the school day to decrease stress and aid settling to learn. They have also led to changes in provision such as the recruitment of an Attachment Lead / Teacher-Therapist / Inclusion Mentor and introduction of key adult systems. Virtual School working in partnership

The Virtual School for children in care and those previously in care joined the Universities of Brighton and Sussex to highlight the role of foster carers in raising aspirations for their young people. The conference aimed to raise awareness of the low progression to university for care leavers. Sam Wilson, Head of the Virtual School, offered insight into how foster carers can support their young people through education, and potentially into university. We cannot underestimate how important it is to share high aspirations and higher education opportunities with our children in care and those previously in care early on in their education. The better children can achieve at KS4, the greater their chances of progressing to university.

  

Miss School Miss Out

One of the Brighton & Hove Education Partnership’s top priorities is improving school attendance. It has launched a new campaign across the city to address this which we hope the whole partnership will support. School attendance is crucial in enabling our children to achieve well in their future lives. With school attendance in Brighton & Hove overall lower than the national average, the Miss School Miss Out campaign has been was well received by headteachers and by school staff. We will be working with schools on an ongoing campaign over the next few weeks. There will be bespoke case studies for schools to send out to their parents and graphics from the posters available for schools to email or Tweet to their parents and carers.

Trans Inclusion Schools Toolkit

The Trans Inclusion Schools Toolkit has been the centre of recent press and social media interest, and Brighton & Hove City Council are supportive of it and the work schools are doing to promote gender equality and promote trans inclusion. The Toolkit has been widely used across the country and is referenced by some national organisations and supported by teacher unions. We are very proud that The Key for School Leaders has recently requested that they reference the Toolkit to support schools across the country.

Attachment Aware Behaviour Regulations

I’m proud to draw your attention to this newly published work. The Attachment Aware local Guidance was developed in consultation with a range of stakeholders, by colleagues within the Brighton & Hove Inclusion Support Service (BHISS) and Virtual School. It is intended to offer Brighton & Hove schools a helpful resource and framework to develop their behaviour policies in line with Attachment Aware principles and national / local drivers around SEMH Inclusion. https://www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/sites/brighton-hove.gov.uk/files/Behaviour%20Regulation%20Policy%20Guidance%20-%20Sep%2018_1.pdf 

The policy development and review will be supported by whole school training (led by the Educational Psychology Team) so that all staff are encouraged to take ownership and are able to support translating their policy into practice, thus leading to improved outcomes around SEMH Inclusion. BHISS, Virtual School and Schools Public Health colleagues will be supporting the whole school approach and citywide implementation plans, including wider rollout across various teams in Education, Health and Social Care.

Central training will continue to be offered to non-school staff, via the Children’s Workforce Development Team on Attachment Aware Approaches (Secure Base Model training) and from this academic year, on Emotion Coaching. It’s been a busy Ofsted time for us. St Bartholomew’s CE Primary was inspected last month and I’m very pleased that they have been judged as Good. What a fantastic result for them which shows the great progress from the last inspection that was Requires Improvement. 

‘Since starting at the school in 2017, the headteacher has shown strong, inspiring leadership. Together with the deputy headteacher, she has united the staff team in a drive to provide the best possible education for the pupils at the school.’

‘Parents are overwhelmingly positive about the school and the way that staff enable pupils to enjoy learning and stay safe. One parent said, “My child literally skips to school and doesn’t want to miss a day.”’

Longhill High School was also inspected last month and I’m very pleased to announce that they too have been judged as Good.

‘The local community has renewed its confidence in the school since the last inspection. Pupils, parents and carers, leaders of other schools and the local authority all agree that the school has improved significantly.’

‘Pupils’ behaviour has been transformed since the last inspection and they are now proud of their school. They are smart, polite and tolerant of the views and differences of others. They recognise the many improvements and are appreciative of their teachers and the leaders of the school.’

Well done to the headteachers Katie Blood (St Barts) and Kate Williams (Longhill), teachers, support staff, parents and of course the children!

Apprenticeship Fair

Our apprenticeship team and colleagues from HR represented the council at the Fuller Working Lives Careers Fair, held at the Brighton Centre last month. The fair was held in collaboration with the council, Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) and the National Careers Service (NCS). Local residents were provided with an opportunity to meet employers, training providers and volunteer organisations, as well as to attend workshops on working in the Health & Social Care Sector, to find out about job opportunities available in the local labour market and to recognise and utilise transferable skills. The event supported the ‘no one left behind’ strand, a priority identified in the City Employment and Skills Plan (CESP) - residents and workers suffering disadvantage in the labour market either through unemployment, low pay or lack of aspiration are supported effectively to make the most of the economic opportunity that the city and its wider partnerships can offer. The CESP is supported by the Employment and Skills Team.

A great start to the academic year

Congratulations to all our children and young people, parents, headteachers, teachers and support staff for the great set of improved education outcomes for 2018.

• Early Years has risen to 72.6%reaching a Good Level of Development, above the provisional national average of 71.5%
• The percentage achieving age related expectations in reading, writing and maths at Key Stage 2 has risen to 67%; well above the provisional national average of 64%
• Attainment 8 at Key Stage 4 has risen to 47.9%
• A* - C A-level results have also risen from 76.8% to 84%

 It is fantastic to see this continued success across the city and a reflection of a lot of hard work and a successful education partnership.

Congratulations to Blatchington Mill - Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) Hub 

Blatchington Mill have been successful in their bid to establish a modern foreign languages (MFL) hub in Brighton & Hove. They are one of just seven schools nationally to have done this. This is a major achievement for the school.

The project will involve supporting other secondary schools to improve outcomes in MFL, important for English Baccalaureate (EBacc) success and also reflective of the city we live in and the life skills we want young people to have, including the ability to be bilingual in a globalised and increasingly interconnected world.

Welcome to our Newly Qualified Teachers

Last week I had the pleasure to meet and welcome some of this year’s NQTs at the University of Brighton, where they were given valuable information about all the support available during their induction year. Both events included inspiring speeches from ex-NQTs and also Mark Holdaway from the Brighton & Hove Inclusion Support Service (BHISS). Behaviour management is one of the biggest concerns for NQTs and I was pleased to see that Mark is leading considerable training for NQTs in this area throughout the year, for both primary and secondary NQTs. Sharon Mackenzie and the School Workforce Development Team co-ordinate an extensive training & development programme and provide useful resources on our BEEM portal for all those NQTs registered with us. We hope they all have a successful and rewarding year!

Snailspace Brighton

It was so good to see our schools and education providers expressing their creativity with the creation of so many junior snails on show across the city as part of Snailspace Brighton & Hove @snailspacebh. Snailspace is an extraordinary art trail across the city from the 15th of September until the 18th of November, fundraising for @MartletsHospice whilst reminding us all to slow down & #BeMoreSnail. You will remember that Brunswick Primary was inspected in June and I’m very pleased that they have been judged as Good. ‘The headteacher and his senior team have high aspirations for pupils. Leaders have a clear vision for the school that is shared by the whole school community.’ Well done to the headteacher Shaun Collins, teachers, support staff, parents and of course the children!

Congratulations to headteacher Linda Dupret and everyone at St Paul’s Church of England Primary School. The school have received their International School Award again. The International School Award team British Council said the following about their application:

Just in case you missed it at the end of the summer term, Year 7 students from Hove Park School spent the day at Hove Park's Big Camp. Students spent the whole day on the field taking part in a range of Forest School type-activities such as making camp fires, team building, obstacle courses, shelter construction and wood craft, with some of our students then camping out under the stars. Well done to Jim Roberts, headteacher at Hove Park School and everyone at the school and at the Local Authority who helped make it happen. Congratulations to Carden Primary for their 70^th Anniversary

Happy 70th Birthday to Carden Primary. It is 70 years this week since the school opened to children. They were lucky to be visited by quite a few of Sir Herbert Carden's descendants who enthralled the children with information about the former Mayor of Brighton.

Promoting STEM in our schools

This month I had the opportunity, along with pupils from several of our schools across the partnership, to see a Mars Rover in action and to participate in a range of interactive activities to stimulate their interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

The University’s Widening Participation scheme works with a number of schools each year to support the aspirations and ambitions of young people in considering their future career options.

Around 800 children from schools in Sussex attended the event on the 12^th of September, based on the theme of space and organised alongside a former head of the UK Space Agency.

The event gave me the chance to see local children engaging with people working in different STEM careers and participating in various sessions and hands-on demonstrations, aimed at providing them with an inspirational learning experience. It was great to see Benfield Primary, Middle Street Primary, Peter Gladwin Primary, St Luke’s Primary & Junior and  St Martin’s Primary taking part. Welcome to our new headteachers

I joined Pinaki Ghoshal (Director of Children’s Services) and Mark Storey (Head of Education Standards and Achievement) to welcome our new and acting headteachers and heads of school for induction to support them all in their new roles. 

Welcome to our new headteachers Bob Speight at BACA, Mark Poston at PACA, Luke Lording at Mile Oak Primary, Rachel Kershaw at St Margaret’s Primary and Gemma Chumnansin, head of school at Benfield Primary.

Welcome also to our new Acting headteachers: Andrew Lincoln, at St Andrew’s Primary, Jo Staveley at Bilingual Primary, Dawn Loader and Sandra Mullholland at Balfour Primary, Natalie Burley at Saltdean Primary and Acting head of school Anna Keane at Hangleton Primary,

Welcome back also from maternity leave Rachel Breen, Cottesmore St Mary’s Primary.

I  would also like to welcome Cassie Palmer from Coldean Primary School and Shelley Baker from Varndean School who have been seconded for one day per week as Pupil Premium Teacher Advisers. They have joined our Local Authority team to support the Brighton & Hove Education Partnership priority to improve outcomes for disadvantaged children and young people. Their work will include direct advisory work with individual schools; support with the LA training and sharing of best practice; support with pupil premium reviews and further development of the LA disadvantaged strategy.
